بَرَاءَةٌ
” BIRR” means to get separate from, distinct from something else, free from other, to have no connection with, disappointed from other.
Thus it has two sides of its meaning. If one thing is separated from other the other thing also gets prominence and is visible. e.g. colored water, if you separate color, clear water is left behind.
From this you understand AL BIRR and AL BARI. “Birr” is internal dissociation from other than ALLAH and “Bari” is external distinction of everything from ALLAH.
So a perfect Muslim has nothing to do with other than ALLAH and nothing is like ALLAH.
ESSENCE OF “BIRR”
Ibrahim (AS) got the essence of it and he was pure from every shirk and idolatry, may it be a physical form, psychological form or spiritual form.
If you follow the footsteps of prophet Ibrahim (AS) you get to a higher station of “BIRR”.
SURAH BIRAT ( TAUBA)
بَرَاءَةٌ مِّنَ اللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ إِلَى الَّذِينَ عَاهَدتُّم مِّنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ
Thus you see that start of surah Tauba is -Bira. From whom? from mushrikeen.
The ayats then give detail about how to dissociate from shirk and mushriks.
As part of HIS mercy because not everyone can get to this level, Allah relaxes you till four, after that you are also likely to be punished.
فَسِيحُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ أَرْبَعَةَ
QURAN AND BIRR
When Quran descends , it is pure and free from every shirk and this is how it should be read, free from mixture, stories, association and meanings.
LAYL TUL BIRAT
Because Quran descended in Ramadhan, at night, the night of Qadr, it is remembered before its arrival as layl tul birat.
This should be a remembrance of how to separate oneself from all types of shirk and repentance.Thus a night, not of celebration but of introspection and self correction, trying to be a true Muslim, trying to get to station of “BIRR”
رَّبَّنَا إِنَّنَا سَمِعْنَا مُنَادِيًا يُنَادِي لِلْإِيمَانِ أَنْ آمِنُوا بِرَبِّكُمْ فَآمَنَّا ۚ رَبَّنَا فَاغْفِرْ لَنَا ذُنُوبَنَا وَكَفِّرْ عَنَّا سَيِّئَاتِنَا وَتَوَفَّنَا مَعَ الْأَبْرَارِ
