إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ — رِجْسٌ مِّنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ — فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ
STOP THE PROCESS OF FERMENTATION -( KHAMAR ) AS YOU ARE A MUSLIM.
Khamar means to cover up, hide, senseless and motionless. Something which covers the rational thinking and intellect so you are unaware of your action.
While this is the internal meaning and is true, its external meaning in the world is fermentation where a yeast ( saccharomyces boulardi ) takes up sugar, from any carbohydrate source like grapes, dates, barley etc and converts it into energy used for budding, CO2 which escapes upward and is responsible for swollen dough and finally the residual alcohol which settles down.
Whenever you do fermentation with yeast alcohol is produced in more or less quantities. This can be found in your breads, burgers, pizza base, nan, and various bakery items.
In this verse of Surah Maida, the act of khamar ( fermentation ) is called impure, an act of devil and thus forbidden.
This should be accepted in all its form. Internally you should not get intoxicated so your rational faculties remains functioning. As a Muslim you should not use yeast for fermentation and avoid khamar in your food items. When you understand and act on either one meaning, you get the same result. If you do not make khamar there is no way that you make alcohol and thus you avoid intoxication. This is the complete act and way of a Muslim.
If you use yeast even in low amount you are likely to harm yourself. Yeast makes your body slow and dulls your mind and it also has been implicated in producing dementia with long term use.
